Product Details
Benjamin H. Shulman might only be 19 years old, but he has soul, and he wants you to have some, too.

The West Island native is the founder of Papa Bill Records, a new label dedicated to releasing the music inspired by '60s soul music.

"Since I was a kid, it was all I ever heard," said Shulman, who credits his mother with explaining to him the history of Motown Records. "The one CD I owned was Greatest Hits of 1965."

With Papa Bill, Shulman isn't just trying to recreate the sounds of the '60s, but also the way of listening. Rather than release CDs, the label is preparing to release its first 45 rpm single, "Boogaloo on Clark Street," from Black Joe Lewis featuring The Soul Distributors. With a still-unspecified release date in late March, the record will be available online, but also on vinyl, which Shulman said is his preferred format.

"There's something about having the actual, original record they made in the '60s in your hand," he enthused, noting that other labels such as DapTone Records in New York are also putting out old-fashioned records. "I've always loved 45s, and I thought, 'how cool would it be to put out my own?"
