Product Details
The complete discography by legendary hip-hop pioneers DEATH COMET CREW. Recorded in 1983 and 1984, the tracks contained were pulled from various recording sessions and some live shows from back in the day. DCC helped usher in a more forward-thinking approach to hip hop, and their influence is visible in acts like EL-P and MF Doom, who both openly acknowledge them as an inspiration. Listening to This Is Riphop, you can hear things never before used in hip hop, the sound collages, the white noise, the snippets from TV and movies. Before DCC, rappers were looping basslines and breakbeats and taking the loop; DCC added a more experimental and layered element to their sound that would be taken to the mainstream years later with PUBLIC ENEMY and NWA.

Fade in to...
Recession ridden NYC late '70s - early '80's. In the clubs a new generation of black, white, uptown & downtown, ghetto & fabulous mixed wildly to No Wave, New Wave, old Soul & Rock. Punk, Post Punk, Funk, Hip Hop & Electro were coalescing into new forms. We created a new scene, and made our own sound of anything-goes-music. Everyone who mattered took the chance to make a new group, new art- or both. The gritty night streets were painted in bright new aerosol colors; bombed trains rolled the tracks and hip hop rocked it's way out of the Bronx. Death Comet Crew recombined hip hop beats, TV Soundtracks & dialog, careening delay washed guitar strings, funky bass, and Wild Style rapping in barely controlled improvisation. ArenaSexDeath- Death Star Crew- and finally Death Comet Crew- Different tags, one year, but the same brand. NYC 1984 - this is Riphop!
Features Stuart Aragbright (Dominatrix, Ike Yard), Rammellzee ("Wild Style", "Style Wars", "Beat Bop") - with tracks from "Insignificance", "At the Marble Bar", and unreleased tracks recorded live from The Pyramid Club 1984.
