Product Details
Musically speaking, New York native, Nickodemu s, is probably as open-minded as it gets. Together with DJ sidekick, Mariano, the two have since gone on to form one of the city's most enduring and creative weekly par ties; Turntables On The Hudson, that has developed from strength to strength over the past seven years. "With Turntables, we star ted with this one idea: music with soul from across the board that would do nothing but make people wanna dance and party.."
Schooled in sounds universal from an early age, it wasn't long before he discovered hip hop on the New York radio airwaves; 98.7FM with DJ Red Aler t and Marley Marl were listened to and recorded, religiously, each and every week. And so began the f Nick's musical development: picking up the necessary DJ skills after meticulously studying the masters' techniques on old mixtapes, utilizing the ar t of timing - he was also an accomplished breakdancer by this point, and then taking it to the streets, literally. "Back then, and even to this day, everything would influence me. I guess it'd star t from going back and hearing something like a Jungle Brothers track and finding out the various par ts of old tracks that they sampled - back-tracking and discovering the roots. As you'd get older you'd want to find out more about where it all came from. It'd be like hearing a phrase or a quote and then finding the whole ar ticle where it all came from."
Equally, six volumes of the highly-collectable 'Turntables On The Hudson' mix CDs, ahost of remixes - including the Thievery Corporation's own 'Supreme Illusion' due on the 'ESL Remixed' album later this year and his own record label, Wonderwheel Recordings, have turned the future bright. Meanwhile, the debut Nickodemus album, 'Endangered Species', set for release through ESL this fall, puts the whole story into perspective.
"I had this idea about the album years before I made it. I'd lived in New York all my life and had seen things come and go constantly. Whatever was flavor of the week, or flavor of the month for that matter, to quote Black Sheep. You'd be in focus one minute and the next you'd be was all getting so disposable. People who were living in New York; the creative people who'd make amazing things, weren't able to afford to live here anymore...the price was getting too high. We call them the Endangered Species , so for me it's the yearning for that deeper vibe in the city - you know, what it used to be like. I'm pretty nostalgic - I guess I always was, but at the same time I also want to create something new and positive from that."
