Humboldt Beginnings represents a new phase in the saga that has been the Pharcyde. Now, after the record label pressure to create the ultra-poor and uninspired Plain Rap and the departure of Fatlip and Tré, the group is back both smaller and invigorated. Now Imani and Romye (a/k/a Booty Brown) are back and accompanied by the production of Spaceboy Boogie-X on this 22-track ode. Based on the title it's quite easy to understand what the bulk of this CD is devoted to, yes ya'll, chronic. Joints like "Bongloads II," "Mixed Greens," "Clouds," "The Bomb," and "The Climb/ Paranoia" are the more explicitly weed dedicated tracks. With no guest shots and a tight knit grouping the hope is that Humboldt Beginnings brings the group and its fans back to the Bizarre Ride/Labcaincalifornia days.
